So Many New Born Babies

Week Three: Kwara State (Ilorin) Children Reception Centre

This place really made me feel emotional. From my first preview visit I knew exactly the areas they needed help. The orphanage has several new born babies, 2 children with additional needs (Autism and delayed mental development), a young person with listening and speech impairment, plus the several other able bodied children. All these combined with staff shortage. If I was to accomplish what I would like for this orphanage it would be to get others to visit, give their time to train the staff in childcare, particularly how to engage children with Special Needs. Plus resources- baby toys, sensory activities, books and school bags all of which were not available.

Most importantly on going financial contributions. Hence I will leave my Gofundme account open for you to make donations if and when you can. I know people are often skeptical about giving money because of all the news we hear of organisations pocketing money that people donate. The fact of the matter is, there are organisations such as this orphanage that suffer because of lack of financial help and international involvement, due to a few bad charities (and government structure).

Whilst I was there a church organization from Canada also visited bringing baby foods, nappies, clothes and a few other things. Although the orphanage is under Government jurisdiction, it relies on the continuous generosity of individuals and organisations like these. Another essential aspect of assisting the orphanage is the follow up. Speaking to the manager this was an area with which they are often disappointed. I was told that people come, make promises and they are not seen again. Hopefully with all our help, I will be able to visit frequently, bringing more resources, training and friends that can contribute their services too.

My emphasis for international support is based mainly on the fact that, the staff need qualified professionals to come and provide training. I myself had to give basic Makaton training to the children so that they can effectively communicate with those with learning difficulties. The rewarding thing was that the children picked things up quickly, they responded well to all the teaching. Even the staff were willing to learn new things but certain assumptions caused limitations, hence the need for childcare training.

Regardless of the limited resources, the children and I improvised. We played outdoor running games which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Even one of the girls with learning difficulties, got involved. It was heart warming to see her off the chair and responding to what we were doing, be it clapping, hopping or running. Often times she would look at me smiling, if I achieved nothing on this trip, at least I made her smile.
